While I worked on the caterpillar quilt this past week, I could not help to think about the LANK quilt that I stitched together for the school's Spring auction. One of the moms asked me to help out and finish a project the kindergarten class had started... During one of the GRACE Arts lessons each child drew a self-portrait as a prince or princess. These were sent away to be transferred onto fabric. When they came back the class decided to make a quilt out of them. I had sixteen squares to work with... the rest sort of came together on its own. The only thing I had in mind was that it had to be unisex! Not too girly, not to boyish. So primary colors were the answer. Then I felt like a little jazz was appropriate so I added buttons to each square. Some were "props" like airplanes and baseballs, others jewels on the girls' crowns and necklaces. I embroidered the school's name, class and year to make this keepsake even more special. The backing was a busy print from the St. Jude's Hospital for Children collection. It makes me happy to think that some of these prints were drawn by children and that the money from the sales goes back to the hospital... On the back of the quilt I drew a grid and wrote the kids names in the squares, so the proud owner of the quilt would always remember the class. The quilt sold for $2,000.00 at the Spring Auction! I could not believe it! The parents loved it and one happy boy took the quilt home...
